Warnings
What you should know before coming to Santa Marta so it doesn't take you by surprise
Water Safety
Don't drink tap water. In Santa Marta, tap water is not potable. Please consume only bottled water or water from a dispenser.
Safe Transportation
Travel safely. We recommend using Indrive or asking reception for taxis. Always agree on the price before getting in.
Sun & Mosquitoes Protection
The Caribbean sun is strong and there are mosquitoes in the afternoon. Use sunscreen and insect repellent constantly.
Cash is King
Many small businesses and boats accept only cash. Suggested tip at restaurants is 10%. Always carry some cash.
Stay Safe
Tourist zones like El Rodadero, Pozos Colorados, and the Historic Center are safe. Avoid walking through peripheral neighborhoods or deserted streets late at night.
Long-Distance Travel
For trips to tourist sites, go to the Public Market (Calle 11 x Carrera 11). Green buses and vans depart from there.
Mosquito Alert
At sunset, there are many 'jejenes' (biting flies). Use repellent, especially on your legs.
Rainy Season (May-November)
Rains are usually strong but short, typically in the afternoon. Always carry a light raincoat.
Stay Hydrated
Caribbean heat dehydrates quickly. Drink plenty of bottled water and try fresh coconut water on the beach.
Tayrona Park Closures
Tayrona National Park closes 3 times per year for conservation. Check official sites before planning your visit.
